NABTEB Begins Review, Validation of Syllabi for 26 Trade Areas in Technical Colleges

Benin City, Nigeria | September 8, 2025

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has commenced the review and validation of curricula for 26 trade areas across technical colleges in Nigeria, a move aimed at strengthening technical and vocational education in line with global best practices.

The review exercise, which kicked off in Benin City on Monday, brings together stakeholders from industry, academia, and professional bodies to update the content of trade syllabi to meet emerging labor market demands. NABTEB said the exercise would ensure that students acquire relevant, practical, and competitive skills needed for employability and entrepreneurship.

Registrar/Chief Executive of NABTEB, Prof. Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe, emphasized that the revision was necessary to keep Nigeria’s technical education system responsive to technological changes and the evolving needs of industries. She added that the board is committed to promoting a skills-driven economy through competency-based training.

The review covers key trade areas including mechanical engineering, electrical installation, building construction, welding, ICT, and automotive engineering, among others. NABTEB noted that the updated syllabi will be rolled out in technical colleges nationwide after the validation process.

Education experts have hailed the initiative as a significant step toward repositioning Nigeria’s technical education sector, which has long suffered from outdated curricula and inadequate alignment with industry requirements.
