FG Unveils Digital Inventory Model to End Essential Drug Shortages in Hospitals

Abuja | September 14, 2025 — The Federal Government has launched a groundbreaking digital inventory management model aimed at ending the persistent shortage of essential drugs in Nigeria’s tertiary hospitals.

The system, unveiled in Abuja, is designed to track the supply and availability of critical medicines in real time, ensuring that hospitals across the country can better manage procurement, distribution, and stock levels. Officials say the move is part of the government’s broader health sector reform agenda to improve efficiency, transparency, and patient care.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare said the initiative would close long-standing gaps in the supply chain that have led to frequent drug stockouts, leaving patients stranded and hospitals unable to meet urgent needs. By digitalizing the process, the model will provide up-to-date information on inventory levels, facilitate quicker replenishment, and reduce wastage.

The project is being implemented in partnership with the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and will also integrate with the Federal Government’s e-procurement platform to ensure accountability in drug purchases.

Health experts have welcomed the development, noting that if properly maintained, the model could save lives by guaranteeing timely access to life-saving medicines, particularly in emergency and maternal health cases.

The Federal Government emphasized that training sessions for hospital administrators and pharmacists are already underway to ensure smooth adoption of the new system nationwide.
