The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has reaffirmed its determination to sustain its nationwide crackdown on unaccredited institutions, popularly referred to as “mushroom” polytechnics, which falsely present themselves as legitimate tertiary institutions.
According to the Board, these entities undermine the federal government’s commitment to providing quality technical education and jeopardize students’ academic futures by operating without accreditation, qualified staff, or standard facilities.
NBTE emphasized that despite existing challenges, Nigeria’s polytechnic sector remains on the right path through ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening skills acquisition and advancing national technological development. The Board highlighted recent measures, including the enforcement of a one-year moratorium on new polytechnics and monotechnics, the banning of unaccredited programmes, and the adoption of digital accreditation systems to curb fraudulent practices.
The regulatory body further warned prospective students to verify the accreditation status of institutions before enrollment to avoid falling victim to illegal operators.
