Accelerating Metering Under Presidential Metering Initiative: Update from NESI Stakeholders Meeting

Eriye Onagoruwa, Representative of the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, provided a comprehensive update on the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) during the recent NESI Stakeholders Meeting. The initiative aims to bridge Nigeria’s metering gap by ensuring end users receive meters at no cost.

Onagoruwa outlined plans to supply over six million meters sourced through various funding channels, including the Distribution Rehabilitation and Expansion Program (DISREP), the Federation Account, and the Meter Asset Fund (MAF). This multi-pronged financing approach is designed to accelerate meter deployment nationwide.

The update emphasized key priorities such as:

Streamlining certification processes for meter installers to boost efficiency

Prioritizing meter installation for high-consumption customers, starting with Band A consumers

Establishing robust communication infrastructure to support smart metering functions

The full rollout of the initiative is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2025. Coordination efforts among Distribution Companies (DisCos), the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), and the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) are ongoing to ensure readiness and seamless implementation.

The Presidential Metering Initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing electricity service delivery and financial transparency in Nigeria’s power sector.
