ADC National Leadership Resigns to Pave Way for Opposition Coalition Takeover

Abuja, July 2, 2025 — In a major political realignment, the entire national leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has stepped down to allow for a smooth takeover by a broad opposition coalition comprising key political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others.

The unprecedented move was confirmed during the unveiling of the coalition at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. The ADC national officers, led by former National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, voluntarily relinquished their positions to facilitate the unification process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As part of the transition, former Senate President David Mark was announced as the Interim National Chairman, while former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola was appointed Interim National Secretary. These appointments signify a shift in the party’s structure as it becomes the formal political platform for the emerging opposition alliance.

In his remarks, one of the outgoing executives noted that the decision to resign was made in the interest of national unity and democratic restoration. “This is bigger than party politics. Nigeria needs all hands on deck,” he stated.

The coalition’s aim is to consolidate political strength, present a unified alternative to the ruling party, and drive a new national agenda focused on security, economic revival, electoral reforms, and social justice.

The gathering also featured political heavyweights such as Rotimi Amaechi, Dele Momodu, Solomon Dalung, and Dino Melaye, among others, who pledged their support for the coalition’s vision. Observers view the resignation and realignment as a defining moment that may reshape Nigeria’s political landscape in the lead-up to 2027.
