AfDB President Adesina Visits Buhari, Expresses Gratitude for Unwavering Support During Tenure

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), paid a courtesy visit to former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, publicly acknowledging the latter’s pivotal role in bolstering his leadership at the continental financial institution. During the meeting, Adesina credited Buhari’s unwavering political backing for his successful 2015 election and 2020 re-election as AfDB president, emphasizing how the former leader mobilized regional and national support to secure his mandate.

Adesina highlighted Buhari’s advocacy during critical junctures, including the 2020 corruption allegations—which were independently dismissed by an ethics committee—and the subsequent campaign for his second term. He noted that Buhari’s endorsement amplified continental confidence in his “High 5” development agenda, which has driven projects such as rural electrification, agricultural transformation, and cross-border infrastructure across Africa.

The visit coincides with preparations for the AfDB’s 2025 annual meetings, where Adesina’s successor will be elected, marking the end of his decade-long tenure. Reflecting on milestones achieved under Buhari’s support, including Nigeria’s $1.5 billion electricity sector loans and the $520 million Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones initiative, Adesina reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to Nigeria’s development goals.

Buhari, in response, praised Adesina’s “exceptional stewardship” and urged continued focus on addressing Africa’s debt challenges and climate financing gaps. The meeting underscored the strategic partnership between Nigeria and the AfDB in advancing continental prosperity, with Adesina pledging to sustain collaborative efforts even beyond his presidency.
