Prominent members of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, gathered at the Muson Centre in Onikan, Lagos, on Thursday to honor the life and legacy of their late leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, during a special symposium marking what would have been his 97th birthday. The event served as both a tribute to Adebanjo’s enduring influence and a platform for reflecting on the ideological foundations and historical impact of Afenifere since its inception.
Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 96, was celebrated as a staunch advocate for restructuring, true federalism, and equity in Nigeria. Speakers at the symposium included notable figures such as Tokunbo Ajasin, Akin Osuntokun, Dr. Akin Fapounda, Sola Ebiseni, and Mr. Dele Farotimi. They described Afenifere as more than just a socio-cultural group but as a deeply political movement rooted in the progressive ideals of the defunct Action Group founded by Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
The keynote address was delivered by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Solomon Asemota, who hailed Adebanjo as a symbol of inclusive nationalism. He highlighted Adebanjo’s bold endorsement of Labour Party’s Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential elections as an example of his commitment to national unity over ethnic politics. Asemota also called for democratic reforms and urged Nigerians to focus on consolidating democracy through free and fair electoral processes.
Former Anambra State governor Peter Obi paid tribute to Adebanjo’s legacy, describing him as a man who lived a meaningful life grounded in truth and values. Obi emphasized the need for unity and justice as pillars for Nigeria’s progress, urging citizens to rise above divisions of tribe and religion.
The symposium not only celebrated Adebanjo’s contributions but also reignited conversations around nationalism, equity, and democratic governance in Nigeria. It underscored his lifelong dedication to progressive ideals and his vision for a just and equitable nation built on true federalism a cause that remains central to Afenifere’s mission.
