AFN Reacts to Favour Ofili’s Reported Allegiance Switch, Moves to Address Athlete Welfare

July, 2025 — Abuja, Nigeria — The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has expressed concern over reports that Nigerian sprint star, Favour Ofili, has switched her sporting allegiance to Turkey, and says it is taking urgent steps to address underlying issues affecting athlete welfare and retention.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Federation acknowledged the growing dissatisfaction among some elite athletes, particularly regarding support systems, career opportunities, and long-term development structures within the Nigerian athletics ecosystem.

“The reported switch of allegiance by Favour Ofili is deeply regrettable. We are committed to engaging with our athletes more proactively to ensure their welfare is prioritised and their concerns adequately addressed,” the statement read.

Favour Ofili, who rose to international prominence with her record-breaking performances and Olympic appearances for Nigeria, has reportedly completed the process to represent Turkey in future competitions — a move that, if confirmed, would deal a blow to Nigeria’s track and field prospects.

AFN officials say the Federation is reviewing policies and structures to curb further talent migration. “We are working closely with the Ministry of Sports Development and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen our support framework and create an enabling environment where Nigerian athletes can thrive at home,” it added.

The Federation also hinted at the possibility of reaching out to Ofili in hopes of understanding her decision and exploring avenues for reconciliation.

This development comes amid increased global competition for athletic talent, with countries offering dual citizenship and incentives to attract high-performing athletes.

Favour Ofili’s camp is yet to officially confirm the move.
