The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has intensified moves to secure financial backing for Team Nigeria’s participation in the upcoming CAA Region II Senior Championships in Ghana, a crucial qualifying event for the Tokyo World Athletics Championships scheduled for September.
AFN officials disclosed that the Ghana competition is pivotal for Nigerian athletes to secure spots at the world championship, noting that adequate funding will ensure optimal preparation and participation. The federation is engaging with corporate sponsors, government agencies, and sports stakeholders to raise the required resources.
According to AFN, the championships will not only serve as a pathway to the global event but also provide Nigerian athletes with competitive exposure against top talents from the West African region. The federation stressed that timely financial support is essential to cover travel, training, and logistics, adding that failure to attend could jeopardize Nigeria’s representation on the world stage.
The CAA Region II Senior Championships will bring together elite athletes from across West Africa, with Nigeria aiming to make a strong showing despite current funding challenges.
