Africa’s Finest Female Footballers Shine as WAFCON 2025 Begins in Morocco

The 2025 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) officially kicked off in Morocco on Sunday, July 6, showcasing the very best of African women’s football talent and sparking excitement across the continent.

This year’s tournament, hosted across multiple cities in Morocco, promises to deliver high-intensity matches, star-studded line-ups, and a renewed push for gender equity in African sports. Defending champions South Africa, perennial favourites Nigeria’s Super Falcons, and rising powerhouses like Morocco and Zambia are all set to battle for continental glory.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria, who are the most successful team in the competition’s history with 11 titles, are once again in the spotlight as they aim to reclaim their dominance after losing the trophy to South Africa in the previous edition.

CAF officials have lauded the growing global interest in African women’s football, noting that WAFCON 2025 will be broadcast in over 30 countries, reflecting its rising status in the international sports calendar.

“The growth of WAFCON is a testament to the resilience and talent of African women. We are proud to see more investment, more fans, and more competitive teams than ever before,” said CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

The opening match saw a thrilling display of skills and tactical prowess, setting the tone for what promises to be an unforgettable tournament. Fans across Africa and beyond are gearing up for weeks of captivating football as the continent’s finest female athletes take centre stage.
