AfroBasket 2025: D’Tigers Settle for Fifth Place as Angola Clinch 12th Title

August 26, 2025 — Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, wrapped up their AfroBasket 2025 campaign in fifth place after missing out on a podium finish, while Angola extended their dominance on the continent by lifting a record 12th championship crown.

Angola, renowned as Africa’s most decorated basketball nation, defeated Senegal in the finals to claim the historic title, further solidifying their legacy in the tournament. The victory marks Angola’s continued supremacy, with their tally now far ahead of other African sides.

D’Tigers, who were once seen as title contenders, exited the race for the championship after an early knockout-stage stumble. However, the Nigerian side managed to bounce back to secure fifth position, showcasing flashes of brilliance but falling short of expectations set by their 2015 AfroBasket triumph.

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) praised the team’s efforts, noting that attention will now shift to preparations for upcoming international fixtures, including the FIBA World Cup qualifiers. Basketball enthusiasts across Nigeria have urged for better investment in the sport’s grassroots development, improved coaching structures, and long-term planning to restore D’Tigers’ competitive edge on the African stage.
