Abuja — The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) has pledged its commitment to work closely with the Amana Farmers and Grains Supplies Association of Nigeria (AFGSAN) in advancing food sovereignty, economic diversification, and boosting farmers’ incomes across the country.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by AFGSAN’s delegation led by its Chairman, Alhaji Haruna Ahmed Fanbeguwa, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, reaffirmed government’s readiness to create enabling policies, ensure access to capital, and provide credit facilities to strengthen the agricultural sector.
Kyari emphasized that the partnership with credible farmers’ associations such as AFGSAN aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that private sector participation remains crucial in driving agricultural growth. “We need the private sector, and you are the major drivers of the economy. Government provides policy and support for the private sector to thrive and ensure economic diversification,” he said.
The Minister also disclosed that the Ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to establish a reliable registry of farmers and farmlands. According to him, a pilot phase will be launched in Nasarawa State, where cultivated farmlands and the actual farmers working them will be digitally documented. This, he explained, would ensure that government interventions directly reach genuine farmers rather than “farmers by name.”
Kyari appealed to AFGSAN and other associations to support the ministry by facilitating the registration of authentic farmers, stressing that such collaboration would guarantee that interventions translate into increased productivity and national food security.
In his remarks, AFGSAN Chairman, Alhaji Haruna Ahmed Fanbeguwa, assured the Ministry of the association’s continued cooperation and support in implementing sustainable agricultural projects. He affirmed that the group remains committed to promoting practices that will transform the agricultural landscape and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic progress.
