In a spirited display of military excellence and public engagement, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base in Kano threw open its gates on Saturday as part of activities marking the 61st Anniversary of the Force. The open day event drew a large and enthusiastic crowd, offering civilians a rare glimpse into the world of aviation, air power, and national defence.
The air base came alive with a blend of thrilling aerial displays, static aircraft exhibitions, and interactive sessions designed to showcase the capabilities and heritage of the Nigerian Air Force. From the roaring fly-pasts of fighter jets to the graceful manoeuvres of transport aircraft, the spectacle was as captivating as it was informative.
Visitors, particularly school children and youth groups, were treated to career talks by seasoned officers, who used the platform to spark interest in military service and aviation professions. The young attendees had the chance to engage directly with pilots, engineers, and ground crew, gaining insight into the operations that sustain Nigeria’s air defence.
One excited visitor described the experience as “extraordinary,” saying, “Standing just steps away from powerful aircraft and witnessing thrilling aerial displays that left the crowd in awe is an experience I will never forget.”
In addition to the air shows, the event featured exhibitions of modern air platforms, technical demonstrations, and educational booths, reinforcing the Air Force’s commitment to public education and transparency.
Air Officer Commanding Air Training Command, Air Vice Marshal Nnamdi Ananaba, addressed guests at the event, highlighting the significance of civil-military relations. He stressed that the open day was designed to foster greater trust and understanding between the Nigerian Air Force and the public, while also celebrating the institution’s legacy of service and sacrifice.
“This event is about bridging the gap between the Force and the people. It is a day of pride for us to open our gates and let Nigerians see the work we do in securing their skies,” he stated.
The NAF’s 61st Anniversary celebrations continue with similar activities across other commands, including medical outreaches, ceremonial parades, and inter-service sporting events — all aimed at reinforcing national unity and appreciation for the armed forces.
Saturday’s event in Kano stood as a powerful reminder of the professionalism, discipline, and evolving capabilities of the Nigerian Air Force, while leaving a lasting impression on the hearts of visitors young and old.
