Akpabio Transfers Leadership of Akwa Ibom APC to State Executives

Akwa Ibom, Nigeria — Senate President Godswill Akpabio has officially relinquished leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State to the party’s state executive council, urging unity and grassroots mobilisation ahead of future elections.

The handover took place on Saturday, July 12, 2025, during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held in Uyo, the state capital. Akpabio stated that his focus will now shift entirely to his national responsibilities, including presiding over the Senate and supporting President Bola Tinubu’s administration at the federal level.

He noted that the decision to formally cede the reins of leadership to the state structure was in line with the party’s constitution and a necessary step to strengthen the party’s grassroots coordination.

“This is not about me. It’s about building a formidable party structure that can win elections and deliver good governance to the people,” Akpabio declared.

The Senate President urged party members to give full support to the newly affirmed leadership in the state and to avoid factionalism and internal divisions. He emphasized that the time had come to consolidate party structures across the 31 local government areas of the state.

In response, the Akwa Ibom APC State Chairman, Hon. Stephen Leo Ntukekpo, expressed appreciation to Akpabio for his leadership and sacrifice, promising to uphold party discipline and drive mobilisation efforts across the state.

The meeting was attended by party leaders, elected officials, and key stakeholders from across the state.
