President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called on parliamentarians across the world to embrace peace and justice as collective responsibilities toward building a secure and inclusive global society.
Speaking at the 148th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland, Akpabio emphasized the need for lawmakers to rise above political differences and national interests to safeguard humanity’s shared future.
“Our destinies as human beings are intertwined. Peace and justice are not just lofty ideals; they are necessities for survival in an increasingly fragile world,” Akpabio said in his address to delegates from over 170 member countries.
The Senate President noted that the world is grappling with worsening conflicts, rising poverty, displacement, and climate change, all of which demand united parliamentary action and moral leadership. He urged fellow lawmakers to use their legislative powers to promote social equity, rule of law, and sustainable development.
Akpabio also highlighted Nigeria’s own efforts under the administration of President Bola Tinubu to strengthen democratic institutions, uphold human rights, and implement inclusive governance reforms.
“The Nigerian National Assembly is committed to fostering laws that promote national unity, economic growth, and justice for all citizens,” he affirmed.
The IPU Assembly, themed “Parliamentary Diplomacy for Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions,” serves as a global forum where lawmakers discuss solutions to global crises and foster collaboration beyond borders.
As part of the Nigerian delegation, Akpabio engaged with international counterparts on the sidelines of the conference, advocating for deeper inter-parliamentary cooperation, especially in addressing terrorism, youth unemployment, and inequality across Africa.
The conference continues through the week, featuring sessions on climate action, human rights, migration, and peacebuilding strategies for conflict-prone regions.
