Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, the newly crowned 46th Alaafin of Oyo, has shared his experience of receiving news of his selection while residing in Canada. The monarch revealed that he was abroad when the announcement was made, marking a significant moment in his life and the history of the Oyo Kingdom.
Oba Owoade, who had been living and working as a Project Coordinator at Manitoba Hydro in Winnipeg, Canada, was informed of his appointment by Governor Seyi Makinde on January 10, 2025. Following this, he returned to Nigeria to formally receive his letter of appointment on January 13, 2025, from the Oyo State Government. His arrival in Oyo marked the beginning of traditional rites leading up to his coronation on April 5, 2025.
The Alaafin’s selection process was not without controversy. While Governor Makinde approved his appointment based on recommendations from the Oyomesi (kingmakers), opposition arose from some factions within the royal council. Five kingmakers challenged the validity of his appointment, insisting they had nominated another candidate. Despite this, Oba Owoade’s ascension was upheld by the state government and widely celebrated by Yoruba leaders and citizens.
Reflecting on his journey to the throne, Oba Owoade emphasized the importance of unity and cultural preservation. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve his people and vowed to prioritize youth empowerment, infrastructure development, and cultural promotion during his reign. The monarch also called for reconciliation among aggrieved factions within the royal council to foster peace and progress in Oyo.
Oba Owoade’s background as a mechanical engineer and project manager has been highlighted as an asset for modernizing governance within the kingdom. His education and professional experience in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and Canada position him as a forward-thinking leader capable of addressing contemporary challenges while upholding Yoruba traditions.
The Alaafin’s coronation ceremony was a grand affair attended by dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond. Residents of Oyo celebrated with pomp and pageantry, underscoring their excitement for a new era under Oba Owoade’s leadership. As he begins his reign, expectations are high for transformative initiatives that will enhance the socio-economic well-being of the kingdom while preserving its rich heritage.
