Alaafin Warns Ooni Over Controversial Chieftaincy Title

August 18, 2025 — A fresh wave of tension has emerged in Yorubaland as the Alaafin of Oyo issued a stern warning to the Ooni of Ife, demanding the withdrawal of a recently conferred chieftaincy title or risk grave consequences.

The Alaafin, one of the most revered monarchs in Oyo, criticized the conferment, describing it as a violation of cultural protocols and ancestral traditions. He cautioned that such actions, if unaddressed, could erode the sanctity of Yoruba traditional institutions and ignite discord among royal families.

The Ooni of Ife, recognized as the spiritual leader of the Yoruba people, had earlier bestowed the disputed title on a prominent figure, sparking wide debate across cultural and traditional platforms. While some observers welcomed the gesture, others, led by the Alaafin, insist that due process must be respected to safeguard harmony within the kingdom.

Insiders disclosed that elders and stakeholders within the Yoruba Council of Obas are already considering stepping in to prevent the conflict from escalating. Analysts fear that if the standoff lingers, it could deepen divisions within the Yoruba socio-cultural space at a time when unity remains crucial for heritage preservation and collective progress.

As of press time, the Ooni’s palace had not released any official statement in response to the Alaafin’s demand.
