In a significant political development, Ifeanyi Ibezi, a prominent figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former representative of the Idemili North and South federal constituency in the House of Representatives, has resigned from the party. His departure comes in the wake of the APC’s recent primary elections in Anambra State. Ibezi has publicly declared his support for the incumbent Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), endorsing him for a second term in the upcoming November 8, 2025, governorship election.
The APC’s primary elections have been marred by controversy and internal discord. Notably, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu secured the party’s nomination, a decision that has been met with dissatisfaction among some party members who question his qualifications compared to other aspirants. This discontent has led to a series of resignations and withdrawals from the party. For instance, Dr. Paul Chukwuma, a leading gubernatorial aspirant, resigned from the APC just hours before the primary election, expressing concerns over the party’s internal dynamics. Similarly, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo withdrew from the APC race, citing ethical and security concerns.
In contrast, APGA has demonstrated a unified front by unanimously endorsing Governor Soludo as their sole candidate for the forthcoming election. At a convention attended by delegates from all 21 local government areas of Anambra State, Soludo was re-nominated unopposed, reflecting the party’s confidence in his leadership and governance.
The political landscape in Anambra is further complicated by the emergence of candidates from other parties. Dr. George Moghalu clinched the Labour Party’s ticket, defeating his sole rival, John Chuma Nwosu, in a primary election held in Awka. Meanwhile, the APC’s internal challenges persist, with multiple aspirants withdrawing from the race, leading to confusion and uncertainty within the party ranks.
As the November election approaches, these developments underscore the shifting allegiances and strategic recalibrations among Anambra’s political actors. The consolidation within APGA, contrasted with the turbulence in the APC, may significantly influence voter perceptions and the overall outcome of the gubernatorial race.
