In a decisive move to uphold integrity within the ranks of the Nigeria Police Force, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered the immediate detention of three police inspectors following allegations bordering on corrupt practices.
The directive, which was issued on Tuesday, comes in response to credible reports received by the Anambra State Police Command regarding the conduct of the officers while carrying out official duties. Although the specific details of the alleged misconduct have not been fully disclosed to the public, authoritative sources within the command confirmed that the case involves unethical solicitation and abuse of office, contrary to the professional standards expected of officers in the Force.
CP Orutugu, who assumed leadership of the Anambra Command with a firm stance on discipline and accountability, was said to have personally approved the detention of the officers pending the outcome of a thorough internal investigation. The move is aimed at sending a clear message that under his watch, acts of corruption will not be tolerated, regardless of rank or status.
Speaking through the command’s spokesperson, the police boss reaffirmed his commitment to restoring public confidence in the operations of the police in the state. He stressed that the Force, under the current leadership of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is determined to rid its ranks of rogue elements and ensure that the ethics of policing are upheld at all times.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains a disciplined institution, and any personnel found to be involved in acts that undermine public trust will be decisively dealt with. The ongoing investigation will be conducted in line with established police procedures, and appropriate sanctions will be meted out if the officers are found culpable,” the statement read in part.
The identities of the three inspectors have been temporarily withheld, as the disciplinary process is still ongoing. However, CP Orutugu has assured members of the public that the outcome of the probe will be made known in due course, in the spirit of transparency and accountability.
He also called on residents of Anambra State to report any cases of police misconduct or extortion through the official complaint channels, assuring that such complaints would be treated with urgency and fairness.
This latest development comes amid a broader national conversation on police reform and the need for improved professionalism within the ranks. Observers believe that actions such as this, if sustained, could contribute significantly to rebuilding public trust in law enforcement agencies across the country.
