Anthony Joshua’s potential fight against Jake Paul has been met with skepticism by talkSPORT boxing pundits Spencer Oliver and Gareth A Davies. The pair believe that a fight against Paul would be ill-timed for Joshua, who has been out of action since his defeat to Daniel Dubois last September.
Paul recently criticized Joshua’s skills and chin on social media, prompting Joshua to reveal that the two had a phone call that lasted over five minutes. Joshua even teased a potential clash by posting “2026” on his Instagram.
However, Oliver and Davies argue that Joshua’s priorities should lie elsewhere, despite the potential for a lucrative payday. “One thing that Jake Paul does is draw huge numbers,” Oliver said on talkSPORT’s Fight Night. “There’s not a fighter that wouldn’t fight him because there’s huge money on the table, that’s the fact.”
Oliver emphasized that while a fight against Paul might be tempting, it’s not the right move for Joshua at this time. “I don’t think we could see it but later rather than sooner,” he said.
Davies echoed Oliver’s sentiments, warning that a fight against Paul could damage Joshua’s credibility. “Anthony Joshua would lose all credibility if his next fight was against Jake Paul,” Davies said.
Joshua had initially been eyeing a fight against Tyson Fury, but the latter’s retirement from boxing has ruled out that possibility. For now, it seems that a fight against Paul is not the best option for Joshua’s career.
