Any politician pledging to serve just a single term requires psychiatric evaluation” – Governor Soludo

In a striking statement, Enugu State Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo warned that any political figure declaring an intention to govern for just one term may need psychiatric assessment. According to Governor Soludo, defining one’s ambition in such limited terms reflects a mindset that merits deeper scrutiny. Speaking at a high-level engagement in Lagos, the Governor argued that political leadership demands dedication beyond fleeting popularity or electoral convenience.

The Governor emphasised that true public servants should adopt long-term visions, not capriciously withdraw from responsibilities after one term. He stated that declaring single‑term pledges is “telling of instability or fear of accountability,” suggesting mental preparedness must be assured before voters place trust in such leaders.

Soludo pointed out that effective governance requires continuity and unwavering commitment, adding that every term in office comes laden with challenges that call for persistence and resolve. He further criticised those who use the “one‑term only” tagline to appeal to public sentiment, calling it a possible sign of psychological fragility.

In wrapping up, the Governor underlined that the electorate should pay close attention to such declarations, not merely as campaign rhetoric, but as potential indicators of temperament unsuited for sustained leadership. He insisted that holding public office should be a sober commitment, not a fleeting personal ambition.
