AON Applauds Minister Festus Keyamo on Appointment as BAG Council Chair

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has lauded the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), following his appointment as Chairman of the Bureau of African Group (BAG) Council of Ministers.

The commendation was issued in a statement signed by AON spokesperson and prominent aviation journalist, Chinedu Eze, who described the appointment as a strategic win for Nigeria and a testament to the minister’s growing influence in continental aviation policy-making.

According to AON, Keyamo’s selection for the prestigious role signifies international recognition of Nigeria’s leadership in the aviation sector, especially as the country pushes reforms to enhance safety, infrastructure development, and air connectivity across the continent.

“The appointment of our Minister, Festus Keyamo, as Chairman of the BAG Council of Ministers is a welcomed development and a proud moment for the Nigerian aviation industry,” the association stated.

The BAG Council of Ministers, under the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), plays a pivotal role in shaping policies that affect air transport liberalization, regulatory frameworks, and capacity development among African Union member states. As Chair, Keyamo is expected to spearhead efforts to strengthen intra-African air travel, harmonize safety standards, and advance the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) agenda.

AON expressed confidence in Keyamo’s ability to represent Nigeria effectively and to advocate for policy directions that support airline sustainability and market growth. The group also pledged its support for the minister, urging him to use the platform to attract investment, boost bilateral agreements, and enhance Nigeria’s aviation competitiveness.

Keyamo’s appointment comes at a time when Nigeria is intensifying efforts to position itself as a regional aviation hub through infrastructure upgrades, airspace modernization, and the strategic expansion of local carriers.

The Minister has already indicated readiness to collaborate with other African aviation stakeholders to improve connectivity, reduce operational bottlenecks, and create a more inclusive and efficient air transport ecosystem across the continent.
