Apapa Customs, Navy Partner to Strengthen Maritime Security

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian Navy have launched a collaborative initiative aimed at bolstering maritime security at the nation’s busiest port, Apapa. This strategic partnership, announced on May 11, 2025, seeks to address growing concerns over smuggling, piracy, and other criminal activities that threaten the safety of Nigeria’s maritime sector.

The partnership comes at a time when the Apapa Port, located in Lagos, handles a significant portion of Nigeria’s imports and exports. With the increasing volume of goods passing through the port, there have been rising concerns over illegal trade, especially the smuggling of prohibited goods and contraband. Additionally, piracy and armed robbery incidents have been reported in the Gulf of Guinea, putting maritime operations at risk.

The collaboration between the NCS and the Nigerian Navy is designed to enhance security measures at the port through joint patrols, intelligence-sharing, and enhanced surveillance systems. This initiative is expected to curb illegal activities, safeguard ships docking at the port, and improve the overall safety of cargo transport across Nigeria’s maritime corridors.

The partnership also aims to improve the operational efficiency of the Customs Service by facilitating smoother inspections and clearance processes while maintaining high-security standards. Customs officers, in coordination with naval personnel, will have more resources and support to monitor and prevent illicit shipments that could compromise national security or harm the economy.

Both the NCS and the Navy have expressed optimism that this collaboration will have a positive impact on the safety of trade routes, reduce criminal activity, and contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s economy. The initiative also aligns with the government’s broader efforts to revitalize the maritime sector and improve the efficiency of its ports.

Officials have also emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between government agencies and the private sector to achieve long-term stability and security in the maritime industry. The partnership is expected to expand over time, incorporating advanced technologies and training programs to further enhance Nigeria’s maritime capabilities.

As part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen maritime security, stakeholders have called for more investment in infrastructure and personnel training to ensure the sustainability of security measures at the nation’s ports. With these combined efforts, both the Customs Service and the Navy are hopeful that they will be able to foster a safer and more secure maritime environment for Nigeria’s growing trade industry.
