APC Chairman Ganduje Resigns, Citing Health and Party Zoning Pressures

Abuja, Nigeria – June 27, 2025

Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has officially resigned as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party confirmed on Friday. The former Kano State governor tendered his resignation, effective immediately, citing health concerns and long-standing pressure from party stakeholders regarding internal zoning arrangements .

Sources within the APC revealed that Ganduje submitted his letter of resignation to the party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, during a meeting in Abuja. His departure follows months of agitation from the North-Central zone, which has demanded that the chairmanship return to their region as part of the party’s zoning agreement .

According to insiders, Ganduje’s worsening health condition increasingly hindered his ability to meet the demands of the leadership role. “He has been battling health challenges for some time, and it reached a point where he could no longer continue,” a senior party official said .

The sudden resignation sparked confusion within party headquarters, as staff were seen removing Ganduje’s personal belongings. No formal statement has yet been released by the presidency .

In the interim, one of the APC’s national vice chairmen is expected to assume the chairmanship duties until a substantive replacement is chosen during the party’s national convention scheduled for December 2025 .

APC insiders describe Ganduje’s exit as a “unifying gesture,” aimed at placating internal divisions and repositioning the party ahead of the critical 2027 general elections .
