Arsenal are in advanced talks to sign Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres as the Gunners step up their hunt for a new number nine ahead of the new Premier League season.
Although there is no official agreement yet between Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon, sources say both clubs are working with a shared desire to get the deal across the line. Arsenal are encouraged by the 27-year-old’s eagerness to make the move to the Emirates, and personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block.
In a clear sign that negotiations are progressing, Sporting have now granted Gyokeres an extended break from pre-season. The Sweden international, who was originally due to return on Monday, has been given until Friday to allow talks to continue. It remains uncertain whether he will return at all, as a potential move edges closer.
Arsenal have made bringing in a proven striker a priority this summer. They have explored options including RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, but have now turned serious attention to Gyokeres, who is also on Manchester United’s radar.
Sporting president Frederico Varandas has insisted the forward will not leave for £59 million and denied the existence of a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ that would allow Gyokeres to depart for around £50.8 million plus add-ons.
Gyokeres joined Sporting from Coventry in 2023 for about £20 million and has since become one of the most prolific strikers in Europe. He netted an astonishing 54 goals in 52 appearances last season, including a memorable hat trick against Manchester City in the Champions League, as he led Sporting to both the league title and Portuguese Cup.
A switch to Arsenal would mark a return to English football for Gyokeres, who previously had spells with Brighton, Swansea, and Coventry. He scored 43 goals in two and a half seasons with Coventry, making his name as one of the Championship’s deadliest forwards.
Should Arsenal seal the move, Gyokeres will bring much-needed firepower to Mikel Arteta’s squad as the Gunners prepare for another title challenge and European campaign.
