Atiku, El-Rufai Lead Formation of New Political Party, All Democratic Alliance, Under National Opposition Coalition

In a significant development within Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, a new political party known as the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) has been unveiled by a coalition of key opposition figures, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. The formation of the party comes under the platform of the National Opposition Coalition, a political alliance reportedly designed to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and provide Nigerians with what they described as a “credible and unified alternative.”

The emergence of the All Democratic Alliance is being interpreted by political analysts as a strategic move by dissatisfied elements across existing opposition platforms, including factions from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and other minor parties, to recalibrate and consolidate ahead of the 2027 general elections. Sources close to the development disclosed that preliminary consultations and negotiations for the party’s formation had been ongoing for several months, with key stakeholders expressing concern over what they described as growing disillusionment with the current administration and a weakening of public trust in traditional party structures.

The coalition, according to insiders, seeks to bridge ideological and regional divides by bringing together political heavyweights and grassroots mobilisers under a common agenda of economic revival, national unity, and institutional reform. Atiku Abubakar, who has contested the presidency multiple times and remains a central figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics, is believed to be playing a pivotal role in laying the foundational structure of the new movement. Equally, El-Rufai’s involvement — a former APC chieftain known for his administrative experience and political reach — has sparked interest and speculation about the depth of discontent within the ruling party.

While an official launch event for the ADA is reportedly being planned, early indications suggest the party will prioritize youth inclusion, governance reform, and transparent leadership, with plans to unveil a policy-driven manifesto before the end of the year. Key political observers have noted that the alliance could reshape political calculations in many states, especially in the North and South-West, where both Atiku and El-Rufai maintain significant influence.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to formally announce the registration status of the party, but sources within the commission hinted that the process is already underway, with the necessary documentation being reviewed.

As Nigeria inches toward the next electoral cycle, the unveiling of the All Democratic Alliance signals a potential realignment of forces and further fragmentation of the country’s political space. Whether the new party can rally sufficient grassroots support and offer a genuine alternative to Nigerians weary of recycled leadership remains to be seen. However, the presence of seasoned political figures at its helm has already made the ADA one to watch closely in the coming months.
