AU Chairperson Calls for Calm and Political Dialogue Amid Fresh Clashes in Libya

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has voiced serious concern over the renewed outbreak of violence in Libya’s capital, Tripoli, urging all parties to exercise restraint and return to the path of peaceful dialogue.

In a statement issued on Friday, May 17, 2025, the Chairperson welcomed the restoration of a fragile ceasefire following recent armed clashes that resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of property. He called for a swift de-escalation and emphasized the urgent need to demilitarize the capital city, which remains a flashpoint in Libya’s ongoing political crisis.

Youssouf stressed that the security and stability of Libya remain a top priority for the African Union and urged all Libyan stakeholders to commit to a national reconciliation process aimed at ending over a decade of transitional uncertainty. “The current situation highlights the need for all actors to act with national responsibility and prioritize the interests of the Libyan people,” he said.

The Chairperson reaffirmed the AU’s support for Libya’s peace efforts and encouraged full implementation of the National Reconciliation Charter, which was adopted during a high-level AU gathering in Addis Ababa in February 2025. The charter outlines a roadmap for political dialogue, inclusive governance, and the restoration of constitutional order in Libya.

Youssouf also reiterated the importance of upholding fundamental human rights, including the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, in accordance with international law. He called on all parties to avoid provocative statements or actions that could further inflame tensions.

The African Union Commission pledged to continue engaging with regional and international partners to support Libya’s stability and sovereignty, while advocating for a comprehensive and lasting political solution led by Libyans themselves.
