Australian Grandma Welcomes Twins at 56 with Nigerian Husband

Angela Peters, a 56-year-old mother of five and grandmother of 12 from Australia, has stunned many around the world after welcoming twin daughters with her 39-year-old Nigerian husband, Bright.

In an interview published by The Sun UK, Peters recounted how her unlikely love story began in 2020 when she connected with Bright’s older brother, Emeka, on a dating app. Although their communication did not blossom into romance, a family photo Emeka shared caught her attention. In that image was Bright, and according to Peters, it was love at first sight.

“It was like a thunderbolt – I knew this was the man I was meant to be with,” she said.

Bright, who was working as a cook in South Africa at the time, began speaking with Peters, who was based in Australia. After nine months of long-distance communication, she travelled to Nigeria in February 2021. Just nine days after meeting for the first time in person, the couple tied the knot in a civil ceremony in Lagos.

While her children were initially shocked by the marriage news, Peters was confident they would come to accept her decision. “The kids were horrified when I called to tell them, but I knew that once they met Bright, they’d understand,” she said.

Peters had previously been married for decades before divorcing in 2019. Though she initially had no desire to have more children, her husband’s longing to be a father inspired her to reconsider. She was transparent about her age and her perimenopausal status but was taken aback when Bright confidently predicted they would have twin daughters.

After discovering that the legal age limit for in-vitro fertilisation in Australia was 52, she began exploring fertility options in Nigeria. With doctors in Nigeria showing no hesitation, Peters started IVF treatment using a donor egg and Bright’s sperm at the age of 54.

In December 2023, she discovered she was pregnant with twins. By August 2024, the couple had welcomed their twin girls, Khorus and Knowyn, fulfilling Bright’s earlier prediction.

Despite scepticism and online criticism, Peters said the pregnancy was smooth and even easier than her previous ones. Her children, initially doubtful, became supportive. Her daughter Deina, 28, shared that she feared Bright could be a scammer but later embraced the relationship, especially when she saw how genuine the couple’s bond was.

“It was my daughters’ idea to film my pregnancy journey and put it on TikTok – we wanted to inspire other women who dreamed of becoming mums against the odds,” Peters shared.

Now a mother of seven, Peters said she hopes her story will encourage women to pursue their dreams, no matter their age. Her daughter added, “Mum has proved that age isn’t a barrier to following your dreams.”

Angela Peters and her husband now reside with their daughters and continue to share their inspiring journey online, redefining what is possible in love, family, and motherhood.
