The official autopsy conducted on former Nigerian boxing champion, Olanrewaju Segun ‘Success’, has confirmed that sudden cardiac arrest was responsible for his tragic death during a bout in Ghana last weekend.
According to Remi Aboderin, Secretary-General of Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and President of West African Boxing Union, preliminary post-mortem results identified cardiac arrest as the primary cause, though additional examination of his heart condition is still required.
“The preliminary post-mortem results indicate that Segun died from sudden cardiac arrest,” Aboderin revealed. “However, further investigation into his heart condition is necessary, and consequently, his remains will not be released to Nigeria for burial until approximately two weeks from now.”
The autopsy was performed on Wednesday, April 2, following a court-ordered inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the boxer’s death.
The 40-year-old former champion collapsed suddenly during his light-heavyweight contest against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu at Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League at Bukom Boxing Arena. Medical personnel immediately rushed to his aid when he appeared to be struggling for breath, removing his gum shield and attempting resuscitation before transporting him to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, where he was later pronounced dead.
Witnesses reported that Olanrewaju had been leading on points in the scheduled eight-round bout before the tragic incident occurred.
The deceased fighter had established himself as a formidable presence in West African boxing, holding both National and West African light-heavyweight titles during his career. Since making his professional debut in 2019, Olanrewaju had compiled an impressive record of 24 professional fights, including 13 victories (12 by knockout), nine losses, and two draws.
This incident has sparked renewed discussions about fighter safety protocols and pre-fight medical screenings in regional boxing competitions. Boxing authorities across West Africa are expected to review current procedures following this tragedy.
The boxing community continues to mourn the loss of the respected Nigerian fighter, with tributes pouring in from across the continent. Funeral arrangements will be announced after his body is released and returned to Nigeria in the coming weeks.
