The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ukana, Essien Udim Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Eduma Essien, has urged newly admitted students to steer clear of social vices such as cultism, examination malpractice, indecent dressing, drug abuse, and alcohol consumption, warning that such behaviors could jeopardize their academic future.

She gave this advice during the institution’s 10th matriculation ceremony held on Saturday at the Science Laboratory Technology Arena.
Addressing the students, she said, “Congratulations on your admission into this prestigious institution. I encourage you to focus on your studies and avoid any activities that could hinder your academic progress. Stay away from cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice, and other negative behaviors that could derail your future.”
Essien also highlighted some of the challenges facing the institution but noted that steps have been taken since her appointment to address them. She reassured students and staff that both academic and non-academic activities are progressing smoothly.
According to her, the institution has reconstituted the academic board to introduce new ideas. Additionally, a skills acquisition center will soon be established for the production of tissue paper and furniture, aimed at generating revenue for the institution.
She also announced the completion of the Entrepreneurship Centre, which had been abandoned for years, and the acquisition of new books to enhance the libraries on both the main and annex campuses.

On accreditation, she revealed that the management has formally requested the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to grant full accreditation for programs such as Accountancy, Business Administration, Civil Engineering Technology, and Electronic and Electrical Engineering.
Other programs awaiting full accreditation include Computer Engineering Technology and Science Laboratory Technology. Meanwhile, new programs under resource inspection include HND Statistics, HND Computer Network & Cloud Computing, and HND Software & Web Development.
Acknowledging the institution’s ongoing challenges, Essien called on the federal government, interventionist agencies, and the Akwa Ibom State government to support the polytechnic.
She further appealed to security agencies and the host community to ensure adequate security for students, staff, and property within the institution.
