Abuja, Nigeria – June 11, 2025
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Mahmud Kambari, has highlighted the significant role bamboo can play in addressing climate change through eco-friendly and sustainable housing solutions in Nigeria.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum on sustainable building practices in Abuja, Kambari stated that bamboo, due to its rapid growth and carbon sequestration capabilities, offers an affordable and climate-resilient alternative for construction materials in both rural and urban settings.
He noted that the adoption of bamboo in Nigeria’s housing sector would not only reduce deforestation and emissions but also create green jobs and support the circular economy.
“Bamboo has proven to be a renewable and highly adaptable material. Its potential in climate-smart housing is enormous, especially in line with Nigeria’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and Nationally Determined Contributions,” the Permanent Secretary said.
Experts at the event called on the government to develop a national bamboo policy and collaborate with research institutions and private investors to promote large-scale bamboo cultivation and processing.
The forum concluded with a call for increased awareness and pilot projects to demonstrate bamboo’s viability in low-cost, eco-friendly housing across the country.
