The Bauchi State Government has strongly criticized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following the arrest of its Accountant General, Sirajo Jaja, regarding allegations of a N70 billion fraud. The state government asserts that the arrest is politically motivated and amounts to sensationalism.
In a statement issued by Governor Bala Mohammed’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, the government clarified that its own anti-corruption agency was already conducting an investigation into the alleged financial irregularities prior to the EFCC’s involvement. Gidado emphasized that the Bauchi State Anti-Corruption Agency, led by DIG Sani Mohammed (retd.), had already taken significant steps, including the removal, arrest, and investigation of the previous Accountant General and various permanent secretaries.
Concerns were raised regarding the timing of the EFCC’s arrest, which occurred while the Accountant General was in Abuja attending a Federation Account Allocation Committee meeting. The state government expressed disapproval of what they perceive as the “sensationalism, politicization, and media trial” surrounding the arrest. They belief this has caused “unnecessary drama and suspicion”. Further it was said “Many Nigerians now perceive this as a political witch-hunt rather than a genuine anti-corruption effort. The timing and manner of the arrest cast doubt on the true intentions behind it.”
The Bauchi State Government reaffirmed its dedication to transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law. They have stated that they have strong records of transparent public financial management. The government also pledged its cooperation with the EFCC’s investigation, while simultaneously demanding fairness and due process for its officials.
The state government’s position is that the fight against corruption should be conducted fairly and objectively, rather than being used for political purposes. They have said that they will use all legal options to protect their officials from unfair treatment.
It has been reported that the EFCC arrested the Bauchi Accountant General and other individuals in connection with allegations of money laundering, diversion of public funds, and misappropriation amounting to N70 billion. The EFCC has confirmed the arrest, but has declined to provide further details. It is also alleged that the EFCC’s investigation includes Senator Bala Mohammed, the Governor of Bauchi state.
