Bayelsa Queens Set to Launch 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League Bid in Ivory Coast

Bayelsa Queens, champions of the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL), are gearing up for a fresh continental challenge as they prepare to represent Nigeria in the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers. The competition, which will be contested through the WAFU B zonal tournament, is scheduled to take place in Ivory Coast from August 9 to 24, 2025.

Confirmation of the date and host country was issued by the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B and disseminated through the Ghana Football Association (GFA). A statement from the WAFU B Secretariat, shared by the GFA, affirmed: “The West Africa Football Union Zone B has officially announced the date and venue for the 2025 WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifying tournament. According to a notice from the WAFU B Secretariat, the tournament will be held in Ivory Coast from Saturday, August 9 to Sunday, August 24, 2025.”

Bayelsa Queens, fondly known as the Prosperity Girls, will be making their second appearance at the zonal qualifiers, becoming the first Nigerian club to do so twice. Their first outing was in 2022 when they stormed to victory in the tournament and subsequently recorded Nigeria’s best performance at the CAF Women’s Champions League finals by finishing third in Morocco.

During their memorable 2022 campaign, the Yenagoa-based side defeated Burkina Faso’s US Forces Armées 3–1 in the WAFU B final, before carrying that momentum into the continental stage. Their third-place finish remains unmatched by any Nigerian team in the history of the competition.

Bayelsa Queens earned their spot in this year’s WAFU B tournament after emerging champions of the 2024–25 NWFL Premiership Super Six Playoffs. Under the guidance of head coach Whyte Ogbonda, they delivered a commanding display throughout the playoffs to reclaim domestic dominance and secure qualification for the regional showdown.

Interestingly, the reigning WAFU B title holders are Edo Queens, who lifted the 2024 edition after a convincing 3–0 win over Benin Republic’s Ainonvi FC in the final, also hosted in Ivory Coast. Edo Queens went on to represent the region at the CAF Women’s Champions League finals in Morocco, where they finished in fourth place.

The 2025 WAFU B qualifiers mark the fifth edition of the regional tournament, which has grown into a vital platform for elite women’s clubs across West Africa seeking continental glory. As has been the case since inception, only the champion of the WAFU B tournament will secure the zone’s sole qualification ticket to the CAF Women’s Champions League finals.

With history, pride, and a place on the African stage at stake, Bayelsa Queens will be aiming to rekindle their 2022 heroics and make another deep run in the competition.
