August 22, 2025 — The Benue State House of Assembly has handed down a three-month suspension to its Chief Whip, Hon. Cephas Dyako, and three other lawmakers over alleged misconduct and breach of legislative procedures.
The disciplinary action, announced during plenary on Tuesday in Makurdi, followed intense deliberations on the lawmakers’ alleged involvement in activities described by the Assembly’s leadership as “acts unbecoming of members of the legislature.”
Presiding over the session, Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh stressed that the resolution was in line with the House standing rules and aimed at preserving the dignity of the Assembly. He maintained that the legislature would not tolerate any action capable of undermining its authority or tarnishing its image before the public.
Insiders disclosed that the suspension came after weeks of internal tension, with political alignments reportedly creating divisions among members. The decision to suspend the Chief Whip and others was seen as an attempt to restore order and re-establish discipline within the chamber.
The move has since attracted mixed reactions across Benue State. While some residents and political observers commended the Assembly for enforcing discipline, others warned that the suspension might heighten divisions and distract lawmakers from addressing critical governance challenges in the state.
The affected lawmakers will remain suspended from legislative duties until the three-month sanction elapses, after which their conduct will be reassessed before possible reinstatement.
