Makurdi, July 1, 2025 — Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has reassured National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to the state that their safety and well-being remain top priorities, following recent violent incidents in certain communities.
The governor spoke at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Batch A Stream II orientation program held at the NYSC camp in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area. Represented by the State Commissioner for Youth, Sports, Development and Creativity, Terkimbi Ikyange, Alia said additional security personnel have been deployed to vulnerable host communities. “We have deployed extra security personnel to vulnerable areas to enhance and ensure your safety,” he stated .
He also cautioned heads of ministries, departments, agencies, and private organisations against rejecting corps members posted to them. “Any state agency head who defies this directive could be sanctioned accordingly,” the governor warned .
NYSC State Coordinator Veronica Garba urged corps members to conduct themselves as respectable ambassadors of the scheme and avoid negative activities such as drug use, cultism, cybercrime, and bribery . She also reminded them of the importance of professionalism and ethical conduct as they embark on their primary assignments.
The governor’s assurance comes amid recent security challenges, including reports of herders’ attacks in volatile communities like Mbaa, which led to the temporary evacuation of NYSC members in February . The administration emphasized that collaborative efforts with security agencies are ongoing to restore order and stability.
As corps members prepare to exit camp, authorities reaffirmed their commitment to provide a secure environment throughout the service year. The strengthened security presence and administrative directives are aimed at fostering a safe, supportive atmosphere where NYSC members can fulfill their duties effectively.
This initiative marks a strengthened, coordinated effort by the Benue State Government and security agencies to safeguard young Nigerians serving in the state during a period of heightened local tensions.
