The Nigeria Police Force has recorded another major breakthrough in its efforts to stem the tide of violent attacks in Benue State, with the arrest of additional gun runners connected to recent killings in the region. The operation, led by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department, resulted in the recovery of a large cache of sophisticated firearms and live ammunition.
Among the seized weapons were two General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), 12 AK-47 rifles, and 2,222 rounds of live ammunition, all believed to have been supplied to criminal elements responsible for terrorizing communities in Benue and its environs.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, while confirming the arrests in a statement issued on Tuesday, commended the diligence and coordination of the tactical teams. He reiterated the Force’s unwavering commitment to dismantling illegal arms networks and restoring peace to troubled areas.
The suspects, whose identities remain undisclosed for security reasons, are currently undergoing interrogation and are expected to face prosecution after investigations are concluded. The police further assured citizens that intelligence-led operations will continue to flush out criminal collaborators behind the ongoing bloodshed in the North-Central state.
Residents have expressed cautious optimism, hoping that the arrest will mark a turning point in curbing the protracted violence that has displaced thousands and claimed many lives across local government areas in Benue State.
