The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has parted ways with manager Dorival Junior following the team’s embarrassing 4-1 loss to Argentina in a World Cup qualifying match.
Dorival, 62, had been at the helm of the national team since January 2024, compiling a record of seven wins, six draws, and three losses in 16 games. However, the heavy defeat to Argentina, who have already secured their spot at the 2026 World Cup, proved to be the final straw.
Despite sitting fourth in the South American qualifying group, Brazil’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup remain strong. Nevertheless, the CBF has opted to make a change, with a statement reading: “The board wishes him success in his continued career. From now on, the CBF will work to find a replacement.”
Brazilian media outlets suggest that external Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus is the leading candidate to take over the national team. The CBF had previously attempted to appoint Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, but were unsuccessful. Ancelotti has reportedly been approached again, with a view to taking charge of Brazil at the 2026 World Cup.
