Buhari’s Integrity Will Stand the Test of Time — Even His Critics Know He Didn’t Steal, Says Akpabio

Former President Muhammadu Buhari may have left office amidst mixed reviews of his administration’s performance, but according to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, one legacy remains indisputable—his record of financial integrity while in office.

Akpabio, who made the remark during a public engagement, insisted that even the harshest critics of the former president will eventually acknowledge that Buhari did not misappropriate or embezzle public funds throughout his tenure as Nigeria’s leader.

In his words, “Even those who criticised Muhammadu Buhari will, in the end, agree that he did not steal money while he served as President.” The Senate President described Buhari as a man who remained personally disciplined in managing public resources, even as questions were raised during his administration about certain policies and governance outcomes.

Akpabio’s comment adds to ongoing national conversations about leadership ethics, public accountability, and the enduring issue of corruption in Nigerian politics. While the Buhari administration was often scrutinized over its economic management, security lapses, and perceived lopsided appointments, supporters have consistently pointed to his austere lifestyle and declared anti-corruption stance as a mark of personal integrity.

As political figures reflect on past administrations, Akpabio’s statement is seen as part of broader efforts to shape how Nigerians remember Buhari’s legacy—particularly as the country continues to grapple with leadership trust and demands for transparency.
