Cameroon to Hold Presidential Election on October 12, 2025

Cameroon has officially scheduled its presidential election for October 12, 2025, following a decree signed by President Paul Biya on Friday.

The announcement marks the beginning of the electoral countdown in the Central African nation, where President Biya, 91, has ruled since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. The upcoming election is expected to draw significant attention both locally and internationally, as opposition parties and civil society groups prepare to challenge the status quo amid growing calls for democratic reforms.

While President Biya has not publicly declared whether he will seek another term, political analysts speculate that the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) may field a candidate, possibly from within Biya’s inner circle, to extend the party’s decades-long hold on power.

Cameroon’s opposition, meanwhile, is under pressure to present a united front to improve their chances in a political landscape often dominated by the incumbent’s influence. Past elections have faced criticism over allegations of irregularities, limited media access for opposition candidates, and restricted civic space.

Security remains a major concern in the lead-up to the vote, particularly in the Anglophone regions where separatist tensions have continued to simmer. Human rights groups have urged the Cameroonian government to ensure a peaceful, free, and fair election process that reflects the will of the people.

The country’s electoral commission is expected to release guidelines and timelines for party nominations, campaigns, and voter education in the coming weeks.
