Abuja, Nigeria — August 16, 2025 | The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into allegations of sexual abuse and labour exploitation raised by 12 Nigerian workers recently rescued from the Central African Republic (CAR).
The workers, who were repatriated after months of alleged maltreatment, accused their Chinese employers of sexual harassment, physical abuse, and withholding of salaries. Their ordeal has sparked outrage among human rights groups and labour advocates, who are demanding justice and stronger safeguards for Nigerians employed abroad.
In a statement, the Embassy described the allegations as “serious” and assured that due process would guide its investigation. It stressed that any confirmed wrongdoing would attract decisive action, while reaffirming that the welfare and safety of workers remain critical in international labour relations.
The Nigerian government, through its relevant agencies, has also vowed to support the victims and is engaging with both domestic and international authorities to ensure accountability in the case.
Diplomatic watchers note that while the incident has raised concerns, both Nigeria and China have reiterated their commitment to maintaining strong bilateral ties, with assurances that the matter will not be swept under the carpet.
