A Magistrate Court in Lagos has granted controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, bail in the sum of ₦1 million over a defamation lawsuit filed by Fuji music legend Saheed Osupa. The case stems from a heated feud between the two musicians, which escalated after Portable publicly insulted Osupa in response to a copyright dispute.
The legal battle began when Saheed Osupa accused Portable of copyright infringement for using a line from one of his songs without permission. This led to the removal of Portable’s track from streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. Enraged by the takedown, Portable took to social media, hurling insults at Osupa and questioning his relevance in the music industry. He referred to the Fuji icon as “big for nothing,” sparking widespread criticism from fans and industry stakeholders.
Osupa subsequently filed a defamation suit against Portable, citing the singer’s derogatory remarks as damaging to his reputation. During the court proceedings, Portable pleaded not guilty to the charges. The magistrate granted him bail with conditions, including a ₦1 million bond and two sureties who must be gainfully employed and possess verifiable addresses within Lagos State.
The feud has drawn significant public attention, with many Nigerians expressing mixed reactions to Portable’s actions. While some criticized him for his lack of respect towards an elder in the entertainment industry, others defended his outburst as an emotional reaction to financial losses caused by the song’s removal.
This is not the first time Portable has been embroiled in controversy. Known for his brash personality and frequent social media rants, the “Zazu Zeh” crooner has had several public disputes with fellow artists and stakeholders in the music industry. However, this legal case marks a turning point as it brings serious consequences for his actions.
As the case continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the importance of professionalism and mutual respect within Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Both fans and critics will be watching closely to see how this high-profile dispute is resolved in court.
