Customs Hands Over Expired Drugs Worth N3.77bn to NAFDAC for Destruction

August 27, 2025 — The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over expired pharmaceutical products valued at N3.77 billion to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for proper disposal.

The drugs, intercepted during various operations across the country, were identified as unfit for human consumption after laboratory analysis. Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, said the handover reflects the Service’s commitment to safeguarding public health and strengthening inter-agency collaboration in the fight against counterfeit and expired medical products.

NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, who received the items, commended Customs for the synergy, stressing that expired or substandard drugs pose grave risks to citizens and must be destroyed in line with global best practices.

She assured Nigerians that the agency will ensure the safe destruction of the seized items, while also intensifying market surveillance to curb the circulation of unwholesome products.

Authorities noted that the exercise underscores government’s determination to protect lives, secure the health sector, and ensure only safe medicines are available in the Nigerian market.
