Defence Headquarters Restructures Operation Delta Safe, Other Security Outfits in Niger Delta

Abuja, Nigeria – June 29, 2025

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced a major restructuring of Operation Delta Safe and other military operations in the Niger Delta region to enhance security coordination and effectiveness.

In a statement released by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, the restructuring is part of ongoing efforts to address evolving security dynamics in the region and ensure greater synergy among military and paramilitary forces.

According to the DHQ, the strategic overhaul aims to streamline command structures, eliminate operational redundancies, and boost intelligence sharing among units tasked with safeguarding critical oil infrastructure, combating crude oil theft, and countering militancy.

“The restructuring is expected to reposition the military’s presence in the Niger Delta and further empower troops with the tools, clarity, and cohesion required to secure Nigeria’s economic lifeline,” the statement read.

The Niger Delta, rich in oil and gas resources, has long grappled with insecurity ranging from pipeline vandalism and illegal bunkering to armed militancy. Operation Delta Safe was launched as a Joint Task Force to address these threats, and the new reforms are designed to reinforce its impact amid shifting security challenges.

The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its commitment to a safer and more stable region and urged local communities and stakeholders to support the renewed military efforts toward peace and sustainable development in the area.
