In a significant move aimed at boosting industrial growth and improving the quality of life for Deltans, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has signed the Delta State Electricity Power Sector Bill, 2024, and six other bills into law. The electricity bill is particularly noteworthy as it is expected to be a game-changer in the state’s rapid industrialization drive by providing a legal framework that unlocks investment opportunities in power generation, transmission, and distribution.
The other bills signed into law include the Delta State Physical and Regional Planning Bill, 2024; the Delta State Film and Video Censor’s Board Bill, 2024; the Registration and Regulation of Private Veterinary Clinics (Amendment) Law, 2024; the Child Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2024; the Delta State Pet Control and Responsible Ownership Bill, 2024; and the Delta State College of Health Technology, Ovrode Bill, 2024.
Governor Oborevwori expressed his delight with the passage of these bills, which he believes will enhance the state’s development through his administration’s “MORE Agenda.” He emphasized that the electricity bill will attract significant investments to the state, as power is crucial for any form of industrial activity.
The Child Rights Amendment Law 2024 has also been hailed for providing additional safeguards for children, ensuring that no child is employed or used for domestic help outside their family environment. This law also establishes an Adoption Service Department to address challenges faced by prospective adopting parents.
The governor commended the leadership of the State House of Assembly for their role in passing these important bills, which were crafted after public hearings where inputs from Deltans were sought. He urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure the effective implementation of these laws.
Overall, these legislative developments are seen as critical steps towards improving the quality of life, promoting sustainable development, and increasing the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR).
