Abuja, Nigeria – June 11, 2025
Fresh details have emerged following the decision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to cancel the traditional national broadcast ahead of Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration scheduled for Wednesday, June 12.
Presidency sources disclosed that the President opted to forgo the customary live address in favour of a more symbolic commemoration, as part of efforts to reflect a more “action-oriented” approach to governance and democratic engagement. According to officials, Tinubu will instead participate in a series of low-key events honouring pro-democracy heroes and reaffirming his administration’s commitment to democratic values.
This year marks 26 years since Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999. The 2025 celebration was initially expected to feature a nationwide broadcast and a ceremonial parade. However, earlier this week, the Federal Government announced the cancellation of the Democracy Day parade, citing logistical and security considerations.
While no official reason has been given for the broadcast cancellation, analysts suggest it may be tied to ongoing national reforms, including economic policies such as subsidy removal and forex unification, which have sparked nationwide debate.
The decision comes amid growing calls from civil society groups for deeper political accountability and transparency in the face of economic hardship.
Despite the scaled-down celebrations, the Presidency has assured Nigerians that President Tinubu remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions and protecting citizens’ rights
