By Sulaimon Olanrewaju

June 12 is a date that can never be forgotten in Nigeria if this world continues to exist.

Nigeria had voted in the past before June 12 1993 ,but the narrative changes when Nigerians voted patiently and wisely for the leaders of their choice before the cabals led by General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the June 12 1993 election which was considered the most peaceful and freest election in the history of Nigeria.

Late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola and his running mate Babangana Kingibe had won over 2/ 3 of the election before the pronouncement of the annulment came from the Nigeria head of state general Ibrahim Babangida .

But today June 12 has become Nigeria’s democracy day after the political elites have sacrificed the winner of the fairest and freest election.
Today president Bola Ahmed Tinubu reflected on the democratic process of Nigeria and commended president Buhari for making June 12 a democracy day in Nigeria to replace the May 29 earlier announced by for president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

President Tinubu in his speech at the national Assembly today commended the sacrifice made by late chief MKO Abiola and other political juggernaut who strive for Nigeria democracy to be firmed since twenty six years ago.

Having reflected deeply on the efforts of the heroes of today’s democracy, the president conferred national honours on both the dead and living legends to appreciate their unwavering dedication to the birth of democracy that is stable in Nigeria.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also enjoned Nigerians to play their roles without fear or favour from anybody noting that all efforts geared towards economic development can never be in vain

President Tinubu Also challenged the legislature arm of the government to collaborate with the presidency to ensure that Nigerians are well catered for and raise their hope of better Nigeria as soon as possible.

Babatunde Raji Fashola ( SAN) in his lecture at a program organized by the platform Nigeria to discuss the rule of law and national development says rule of law should not be enforced but need to be part of our daily life

He emphasized that before the rule of law could reign supreme there must not a a sacred cow either as a government functionary, organizations or individuals.

On the other hand Peter Obi who was the presidential candidate for labour party in the year 2023 general elections has condemned this government maintaining that Nigeria is no more a democratic nation pointing at federal government operating without the concept of the rule of law where incompetent people occupied the sits of power making the economic value of the nation being eroded which has left not less than 129 million Nigerians living below poverty line.

Peter obi also pointed as lawlessness being the order of the day where insecurity has taken over almost all the northern parts of Nigeria and some other regions subjecting people to untimely death from the hands of insurgency, banditry day and night without government making enough efforts to curb the situation rather government at the state and federal always celebrate unnecessarily while lives and properties wasting day in day out as if nobody cares about the welfare of Nigerian citizens.
