Democracy Day: VP Shettima Joins President Tinubu at National Assembly for Special Joint Session

Earlier today, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima joined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at a special joint sitting of the National Assembly to commemorate Nigeria’s Democracy Day, celebrating 26 years of unbroken democratic governance in the country.

The historic session, held within the hallowed chambers of the National Assembly in Abuja, formed part of the official events marking June 12—a day set aside to honour the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes and reflect on the progress Nigeria has made since returning to civilian rule in 1999.

Vice President Shettima, who accompanied the President to the legislative gathering, described the occasion as a solemn reminder of the nation’s democratic journey and a reaffirmation of the federal government’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and values.

The event brought together lawmakers, cabinet members, judiciary representatives, and dignitaries from across the country who assembled to mark more than two decades of democratic continuity—an achievement seen as a major milestone in Nigeria’s political evolution.

The Vice President’s presence alongside the President at the joint session underscored the unity of purpose within the executive arm in preserving democratic ideals and fostering cooperation with the legislative arm for the continued progress of the nation.
