Double Break Week? FG Confirms Another Public Holiday

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

This development follows an earlier declaration of Monday, June 9, as a public holiday in observance of the Eid-el-Kabir festival, resulting in a shortened work week for Nigerians.

The announcement was made via a statement released on Sunday in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the federal government.

In his message, the Minister extended warm felicitations to Nigerians, highlighting the significance of over two decades of uninterrupted democratic governance.

“June 12 stands as a symbol of our collective journey toward a nation built on truth, justice, peace, and a secure future,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic progress since 1999, he described the past 26 years as a testament to the resilience, strength, and unwavering resolve of the Nigerian people.

“The story of the last 26 years is one of renewed hope, courage, and national determination,” he said.

The Minister reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to democratic principles, noting that the government remains guided by the will of the people. He further emphasized that the “Renewed Hope” agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is dedicated to preserving democratic ideals and ensuring that Nigerians have the freedom to shape the nation’s political, economic, social, and cultural direction.

Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, commemorates the annulled 1993 presidential election widely acclaimed as Nigeria’s freest and fairest and honours the enduring struggle that ultimately led to the restoration of civilian rule in 1999.
