In a significant leadership transition, Dr. George Elombi has been named the new President of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), succeeding Prof. Benedict Oramah. The announcement was made following the conclusion of the 32nd Annual General Meetings of the bank, held in Abuja, Nigeria.
Dr. Elombi, a seasoned executive within Afreximbank, brings over two decades of experience in trade finance, policy development, and institutional growth. Prior to his elevation, he served as the Executive Vice President for Governance, Legal and Corporate Services, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the bank’s strategic direction and fostering partnerships across Africa and globally.
In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Elombi pledged to build on the legacy of his predecessor and continue Afreximbank’s mission of promoting intra-African trade and driving economic transformation across the continent. “This is a defining moment for Africa’s development. I am honoured by the confidence reposed in me and I commit to leading Afreximbank with a clear vision, innovation, and a deep sense of responsibility,” he said.
Outgoing President, Prof. Benedict Oramah, received accolades for his outstanding tenure, which saw the bank significantly increase its trade financing portfolio and expand its reach through initiatives like the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) and the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) platform.
Dr. Elombi’s appointment is seen as a move to sustain the momentum of Afreximbank’s growth and to consolidate its position as a cornerstone institution in Africa’s economic architecture.
