Abakaliki, August 28, 2025 — The Ebonyi State Government has announced an upward review of the minimum wage for its workers to ₦90,000, making the state one of the first in Nigeria to adopt a higher wage benchmark amid rising inflation and economic pressures.
Governor Francis Nwifuru, who disclosed the development in Abakaliki, said the decision was in line with his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants and cushioning the impact of the current economic realities on workers and their families.
He emphasized that the wage increase was a bold step to ensure that public servants in Ebonyi receive a fair and livable income, stressing that workers remain central to the state’s growth and development agenda.
According to government officials, the implementation of the ₦90,000 minimum wage will commence immediately, with modalities already being worked out to ensure a smooth transition across ministries, departments, and agencies.
The development has been welcomed by labour unions and civil servants in the state, who described the move as “timely and worker-friendly,” while urging other states to follow Ebonyi’s example in addressing the welfare of employees in the face of economic challenges.
